School Glory – Saint Sava

Description

We live in the northern part of Serbia, in Vojvodina. Many  different nations live here. What we all have in common is a mutual respect  for each other and our traditions which we want to save from oblivion. In Vojvodina, as well as in all the other schools across Serbia, we celebrate our school’s patron saint – Saint Sava, every year, on 27 January. Saint Sava is considered as a founder  of legislative  the pioneer of the Serbian mediaeval literature and  first Serbian enlightener and educator.

He was born in 1169 as Rastko, and was the youngest of four sons of the Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja. When he was very young, he  dedicated himself to the spiritual life by giving up  wealth and power, and became a monk. He established  Hilandar Monastery at the Holly Monutain of Athos  together with  his father, as well as numerous other monasteries, churches and schools. On that day, students, their parents, teachers, and other guests attend the celebration in every school across Serbia. Students perform various recitals  through which they pay respect to Rastko Nemanjić, Sveti Sava, and his great contribution to development of education in the Middle Ages.Opening act of the recital is an Ode to  to Saint Sava, called “Uskliknimo s ljubavlju”, by the school choir. After that, students do poetry readings and tell stories about life and deeds of Saint Sava. Finally, there is an art exhibition where students’ paintings are displayed, all of them based on the topic of our Saint and educator.

Intention

This day is very important to us. The school’s patron saint celebration is one of the most significant events for the students across Serbia. One of the customs is that the best students get awards because of their good grades. Every student feels proud and acknowledged when he gets the award. Saint Sava is part of our past, present and future. He has been living within us for 8 centuries. The great Serbian Saint and educator is just a part of the tradition we keep to this day. It is important that we nourish  and respect our customs and traditions, because if we forgot them it would be like we gave up on our ancestors, legacy and roots. That is why we should cherish and preserve it for future generations.

Opis

To predstavlja veliku čast i priznanje svakom đaku.

Sveti Sava je deo naše prošlosti, sadašnjosti i budućnosti. On živi u nama 8 vekova.
