The dual, the cultural heritage of Slovenian languageDvojina, kulturna dediščina slovenskega jezika

Description

A linguist, specialized in Slovenian language, an expert in dialects Tjaša Jakop is employed at the Fran Ramovš Institute in Ljubljana. She spends a lot of time doing field research related to the dual and dialects of Slovenian language. She has authored two monographs and a number of scientific articles on the dual which in ancient times was quite present in the Indo-European ancient-language. Slowly it has been disappearing from today’s Indo-European languages leaving room to the plural. There is just the Slovenian language as well as upper and lower Sorbian languages ( Western Slavic languages spoken by the Sorbs, a Western Slavic minority in the Lusatia region of Eastern Germany) to possess the dual. Sorbian languages and modern standard Arabic language have preserved the dual. The Slovenian dual is special. In written language it can be found in all cases and genders and in all grammar persons. Though in the spoken language and dialects the dual forms equate the plural forms, the dual is not disappearing. In spite of what has been predicted, the dual is still there. »Nevertheless a hundred years ago, being persuaded that the dual would disappear from Slovene quite soon, a French professor sent one of his students (Lucien Tesnière) to Slovenia to collect the forms of the dual.«

Intention

Personally, I treasure the dual, a special grammar number denoting two persons or two things, as the cultural heritage of Slovenian language.

Opis

Poleg slovenščine so jo ohranile le še gornja in dolnja lužiška srbščina in moderna standardna arabščina. Slovenska dvojina je posebna, ker – vsaj v knjižnem jeziku – obstaja v vseh pregibnih besednih vrstah, v vseh sklonih, spolih in v vseh osebah.
