The Motanka doll is a female figure made of pieces of fabric, natural threads, but without the use of a needle. The name of “Motanka” doll comes from the Ukrainian word meaning “reeling” – the process of its creation.
The Motanka dolls have a well-defined head, sometimes have hair made of linen threads. But the body, arms, and legs look more schematic. Motankas do not have the usual facial features and eyes. Researchers argue that our ancestors believed that eyes are the “door” between the real and the otherworldly, so they made a doll without eyes.
People always feared the evil eye, and the Motanka doll should have protected them from the evil eye.
The cross that is usually threaded over the doll’s face symbolizes the sun to the Slavs. Motanka is usually given as a talisman gift to girls and women. Therefore, for us, the Motanka doll represents the power of family ties and the unity of generations.
Intention
The first Motanka dolls appeared about 5,000 years ago; they were associated with the rite of fertility and prosperity. The dolls, made in the old days in Ukrainian villages, were simple, made of fabric remnants and worn-out clothes.
Nowadays, folk craftswomen create original dolls using modern quality materials, reproducing ancient images of old dolls. Since then, Motanka is usually perceived not as a game doll but a long-standing family amulet of Ukrainians.
Each Motanka doll is a unique piece of work. Nowadays, the masterclasses where children and adults make simple dolls are of great importance in popularizing Motanka. It is wonderful that traditions of making and having dolls are preserved and continue to revive. As far as we know, there is no such or similar doll in European countries, so we decided to share the information about Motanka – an important sacred object of Ukrainians, the symbol of good, prosperity and hope for the best.

Лялька представляє собою жіночу фігурку, створену із шматків тканини, натуральних ниток, але без використання голки. Назва ляльки – «мотанка» походить з процесу її створення – «мотання».
Мотанки мають гарно виражену голову, іноді мають волосся, виготовлене з лляних ниток. А тулуб, руки та ноги мають більш схематичний вигляд. Мотанки не мають звичних рис обличчя та очей. Дослідники стверджують, що наші предки вважали, що очі – «двері» між реальним та потойбічним, тому робили ляльку без очей. Недоброго ока завжди боялися, саме від нього і має захищати лялька-мотанка. На обличчі ляльки зазвичай нитками викладається хрест – давній символ сонця у слов’ян.
Мотанку зазвичай отримують в подарунок дівчата і жінки як оберіг. Тому для нас лялька-мотанка уособлює собою силу сімейних зв’язків та єднання поколінь.
Намір
Перші ляльки-мотанки з’явилися приблизно 5 тисяч років тому, вони були пов’язані з обрядом плодючості й продовження роду. Ляльки, які робили бабусі в українських селах, були простими, з залишків тканин, зношеного одягу.
І відтоді мотанка здебільше сприймається не як ігрова лялька, а давній родинний оберіг українців.
В наші дні народні майстрині створюють авторські ляльки з сучасних якісних матеріалів, відтворюють давні образи за зразками старих ляльок. Кожна лялька-мотанка – унікальний витвір. Велике значення у популяризації мотанки мають майстер-класи для дітей та дорослих, де майстрині-лялькарки вчать робити найпростіші ляльки. Прекрасно, що традиції створення та використання ляльок збереглися та продовжують відроджуватися.
Наскільки нам відомо, в країнах Європи немає такої чи подібної ляльки, тому ми вирішили розповісти про мотанку – важливий сакральний предмет українців, символ добра і благополуччя та символ надії на краще.

Die Motanka-Puppe ist eine weibliche Figur, die aus Stoffstücken und Naturfäden hergestellt wird, jedoch ohne den Einsatz einer Nadel. Der Name der “Motanka”-Puppe kommt vom ukrainischen Wort für “Spulen” – dem Prozess ihrer Herstellung.
Die Motanka-Puppen haben einen wohlgeformten Kopf, manchmal mit Haaren aus Leinenfäden. Aber der Körper, die Arme und die Beine sehen eher schematisch aus. Motankas haben nicht die üblichen Gesichtszüge und Augen. Forscher vermuten, dass unsere Vorfahren glaubten, die Augen seien die “Tür” zwischen dem Realen und dem Jenseitigen, und deshalb eine Puppe ohne Augen schufen.
Die Menschen fürchteten immer den bösen Blick, und die Motanka-Puppe sollte sie vor dem bösen Blick schützen.
Das Kreuz, das gewöhnlich über das Gesicht der Puppe gefädelt wird, symbolisiert für die Slawen die Sonne.
Die Motanka wird normalerweise als Talisman an Mädchen und Frauen verschenkt. Für uns steht die Motanka-Puppe daher für die Kraft der Familienbande und die Einheit der Generationen.
Intention
Die ersten Motanka-Puppen tauchten vor etwa 5.000 Jahren auf; sie wurden mit dem Ritus der Fruchtbarkeit und des Wohlstands in Verbindung gebracht. Die Puppen, die früher in den ukrainischen Dörfern hergestellt wurden, waren einfach und wurden aus Stoffresten und abgetragenen Kleidern gefertigt.
Heutzutage stellen Kunsthandwerkerinnen originelle Puppen aus modernen Qualitätsmaterialien her und reproduzieren Abbilder der alten Puppen. Seitdem wird die Motanka in der Regel nicht mehr als Spielpuppe, sondern als langjähriges Familienamulett der Ukrainer betrachtet.
Jede Motanka-Puppe ist ein einzigartiges Stück Arbeit. Heutzutage sind die Meisterkurse, in denen Kinder und Erwachsene einfache Puppen herstellen, von großer Bedeutung für die Popularität der Motanka. Es ist schön, dass die Traditionen der Puppenherstellung und des Puppenbesitzes erhalten bleiben und wiederbelebt werden.
Soweit wir wissen, gibt es in den europäischen Ländern keine solche oder ähnliche Puppe. Deshalb haben wir beschlossen, die Informationen über die Motanka weiterzugeben – ein wichtiger heiliger Gegenstand der Ukrainer, ein Symbol des Guten, des Wohlstands und der Hoffnung auf das Beste.
