Technique of coloring and decorating eggsTehnica colorării şi incondeierii ouălorTechnik des Färbens und Dekorierens von Eiern

Description

In Romania, the technique of coloring and decorating eggs is practiced all over the country, but nowhere like in Bucovina. Two traditional techniques are used: the batik-technique, in which the egg is immersed in three color baths (yellow, red, black) and the egg wax technique, which uses colored bee wax that is directly applied an emptied egg. The working tool in both techniques is the “chisita”, which is a wooden stick that supports a copper metal tube through which melted wax can flow. Geometric, zoomorphic, phytomorphic motifs and symbols of nature and of the Christian cross are featured on the colored eggs. These motifs also appear on folk costumes, carpets and napkins. As the red egg bears a profound meaning, relating to the resurrection of Christ and the renewal of nature, it is of great importance to the people of Bucovina to pass on its cultural legacy.

Intention

In Bucovina, the tradition of painting eggs is passed down from generation to generation and the craft of decorating the eggs transformed into art. Brâncuşi, a famous Romanian sculptor of the modern age, found that the is “the mother of all forms”. The egg is the beginning and the end, it is the symbol that holds the mystery of fertility and that expresses beauty, harmony and perfection. The craft and art of painting eggs with hot wax is an extremely old activity of the Romanian people, reflecting the eternal values of civilization, the quintessence of eternal life and rebirth.

Descriere
