Description
Drežnica is a wonderful small village situated above the country town Kobarid and at the foot of Krn, Each year the villagers organise one of the most interesting carnivals in Slovenia which is of pagan origin and preserved in its original form. Single young men participate in the carnival producing and wearing wooden masks while passing this cultural heritage onto younger generations.
On Shrove Tuesday the single young men from Drežnica come together to put on their carefully made wooden masks while marching through the village featuring about 15 characters. The cortege is divided into two groups; a group of young men who are handsome and a group of those who are ugly. The handsome men go from house to house dancing, thus greeting the villagers.
The inhabitants pay them off by giving them sweets and money. The ugly ones, however, spend their time chasing children all over the place, dispersing ashes over the children’s heads.
Other sorts of masks stroll through the village amusing the audience. There are some other characters too: the leader of the cortege, the musician, the elders, the rooster breeder, (in the times of the Austro-Hungarian Empire craftsmen from the valley of Rezija (today Italy) came to repair objects in villages, the doctor, the policeman and the others. I do hope that the young men from Drežnica will preserve this custom and continue attracting a large audience on Shrove Tuesday.

Drežnica je prelepa, majhna vasica nad Kobaridom, ob vznožju mogočnega Krna. Tam se vsako leto odvije eno najzanimivejših pustovanj v Sloveniji. Gre za starosvetno pustovanje poganskega izvora, ki ga vaščani skrbno negujejo še danes. V njem sodelujejo le neporočeni vaški fantje, ki tudi sami izdelujejo lesene maske in tako prenašajo kulturno dediščino iz roda v rod. Za pusta se zberejo drežniški neporočeni fantje, si nadenejo skrbno izdelane lesene maske in se v sprevodu podajo po vasi. Likov je okrog petnajst, delijo pa se na Ta lepe in Ta grde. Ta lepi obiščejo vsako hišo na vasi in s plesom in glasbo voščijo vse dobro. Domačini jim to poplačajo z dobrotami in denarjem. Ta grdi medtem lovijo po vasi otroke in jih posipajo s pepelom. Tudi vrsta drugih mask se sprehaja po vasi in zabava gledalce. Drugi liki so še: Tisti, ki vozi (ta vodi sprevod), godec, ta stara dva, petelinar, Rezijan (v času Avstroogrske so prihajali obrtniki iz Rezije in popravljali stvari po vaseh), zdravnik, policaj in drugi. Upam, da bodo drežniški fantje še dolgo ohranjali ta starosvetni običaj in privabili veliko obiskovalcev ob pustnih praznikih.

Drežnica ist ein wunderschönes kleines Dorf oberhalb der Landstadt Kobarid und am Fuße des Bergs Krn. Die Dorfbewohner organisieren jedes Jahr einen der interessantesten Karnevals in Slowenien, der heidnischen Ursprungs und in seiner ursprünglichen Form erhalten geblieben ist. An diesem Karneval nehmen alleinstehende junge Männer teil, die Holzmasken herstellen und tragen, um dieses kulturelle Erbe an die jüngeren Generationen weiterzugeben. Am Faschingsdienstag kommen die alleinstehenden jungen Männer aus Drežnica zusammen, um ihre sorgfältig angefertigten Holzmasken aufzusetzen, während sie mit etwa 15 Figuren durch das Dorf marschieren. Der Umzug ist in zwei Gruppen aufgeteilt: eine Gruppe hübscher junger Männer und eine Gruppe hässlicher. Die hübschen Männer ziehen tanzend von Haus zu Haus und begrüßen so die Dorfbewohner. Die Bewohner bezahlen sie mit Süßigkeiten und Geld. Die Hässlichen hingegen verbringen ihre Zeit damit, den Kindern hinterherzulaufen und Asche über den Köpfen der Kinder zu verstreuen. Andere Arten von Masken schlendern durch das Dorf und amüsieren das Publikum. Es gibt auch einige andere Figuren: der Anführer des Umzuges, der Musiker, die Ältesten, der Hahnenzüchter, Rezijanen (zu Zeiten der Österreichisch-Ungarischen Monarchie kamen Handwerker aus dem Tal von Rezija (heute Italien), um Gegenstände in den Dörfern zu reparieren, der Arzt, der Polizist und andere. Ich hoffe, dass die jungen Männer aus Drežnica diesen Brauch bewahren und auch am Faschingsdienstag weiterhin ein großes Publikum anziehen werden.
