Description
The Nabada is a kind of carnival procession on the Danube for young and old and always takes place on the Oath Monday afternoon, i.e. on the third Monday in July. The ceremony of the Oath Speech at the Weinhof in the morning is followed in the afternoon by the cheerful part of the day, the carefree feast of the Nabada.
The “Nabada” is a Swabian term and means something like: downwards swimming or downwards bathing and in our case refers to the Danube, the largest of the three rivers in the city, on which every summer a procession takes place.
The first official Nabada was in 1927. All Ulm schoolchildren have a day off school on Oath Monday. Then the Ulmers hike or drive along the Danube with “Kind und Kegel” (kids and baggage) to the inviting recreation park Friedrichsau, where they secure a “Logenplatz” (front-row seat) on the shore, because now the citizens are in charge! You can be cheerful, carefree, but also critical and speak openly:
In months of preparatory work, many groups of the city, from the institutions, the university, the companies, have given their wishes and annoyances, their opinion of the public life, the politics, the form of imaginative and spectacular festive structures on watercrafts, (similar to the famous Rhine carnival), which are greeted loudly by the spectators on the Danube banks in Ulm and Neu-Ulm. Each ship/boat humorously shows an event from the urban life of the last year, there is praise, insult, and leg- pulling. The citizens can evaluate the presentations, the most beautiful, funniest or most original ship will be awarded later.
The festive ships are framed by numerous music groups from the Ulm area, even on swaying boats. And they contribute to the vibrancy of the atmosphere. From the last ship of the procession, the two mayors greet “the people” and then go ashore in the Friedrichsau. Then the festival begins on the banks of the Danube and in many places in the city with many music groups, there is something for every taste.
Intention
A cheerful folk festival, which also attracts numerous foreign visitors, is celebrated on the Danube in the afternoon. Citizens’ groups use the theme-ships to express their wishes and concerns freely in a humorous way and ships with music groups create good mood. Also remarkable: The Mayor and the members of the municipal council are taken down the Danube to Friedrichsau, a large beautifully landscaped outdoor area, by the “Ulmer Schachtel” (Ulm Boxes), ships typical for Ulm. It is a tradition which brings together families and citizens of all ages on both sides of the Danube river (Ulm and Neu-Ulm) and from the whole area. Carnival groups preparing theme-ships are creating ideas and working together for months to have a well decorated ship presentation on the river and to get an award. Also many families and groups of friends prepare their participation in this “Danube river carnival” in a funny way on ships and other mobile objects and go together to the “Nabada” on the banks and animate the river boats. Schwörmontag (Oath Monday) on the whole, and especially Nabada, is really a community building activity. I like it a lot and I hope it will be preserved by the next generations.

Das Nabada ist eine Art Karnevalszug auf der Donau für Jung und Alt und findet immer am Schwörmontagnachmittag statt, d. h. am dritten Montag im Juli. Auf die Zeremonie der Schwörrede am Weinhof am Morgen folgt am Nachmittag der fröhliche Teil des Tages, das unbeschwerte Fest des „Nabada“. Nabada, das ist ein schwäbischer Begriff und heißt in etwa: hinunter schwimmen bzw. hinunter baden und bezieht sich in unserem Fall auf den großen Fluss der Stadt, auf die Donau, auf der in jedem Sommer ein Festzug stattfindet. Das erste offizielle Nabada gab es 1927. Alle Ulmer Schulkinder haben am Schwörmontag schulfrei. Die Ulmer wandern oder fahren mit „Kind und Kegel“ an der Donau entlang bis zum einladenden Erholungspark „Friedrichsau“, wo sie sich am Ufer einen „Logenplatz“ sichern, denn nun haben die Bürger das Sagen! Sie dürfen fröhlich sein, unbeschwert, aber auch kritisch und deutlich: In monatelanger Vorarbeit haben viele Gruppen der Stadt aus den Institutionen, der Universität und den Betrieben ihren Wünschen und Ärgernissen im öffentlichen Leben und in der Politik ihrer Meinung Ausdruck gegeben in Form von phantasievollen und spektakulären Festaufbauten auf Wasserfahrzeugen (ähnlich wie im rheinischen Karneval), die mit viel Hallo von den Zuschauern an den Ulmer und Neu-Ulmer Donauufern begrüßt werden. Jedes Schiff/Boot zeigt in humorvoller Art ein Ereignis aus dem städtischen oder allgemeinen Leben des letzten Jahres. Da wird gelobt, geschimpft, durch den Kakao gezogen. Die Bürger dürfen die Präsentationen bewerten, das schönste, witzigste oder originellste Schiff wird später prämiert. Umrahmt werden die Festschiffe von zahlreichen Musikgruppen der Ulmer Umgebung, auch auf schwankenden Booten. Und sie tragen zur Lebendigkeit der Atmosphäre bei. Aus dem letzten Schiff des Festzuges grüßen die beiden Oberbürgermeister „das Volk“ und gehen dann in der Friedrichsau an Land. Dann beginnt das Fest an den Donauufern und an vielen Plätzen in der Stadt mit vielen Musikgruppen, es ist für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei.
Absicht
Aber nachmittags wird gefeiert mit einem fröhlichen Volksfest auf der Donau, das auch zahlreiche auswärtige Besucher*innen anzieht. Bürgergruppen nutzen die Themenschiffe, um ihre Wünsche und Anliegen auf humorvolle Art und Weise frei zu äußern, Schiffe mit Musikgruppen sorgen für Stimmung, aber auch die für Ulm typischen „Ulmer Schachteln“ schippern mit den Bürgermeistern und Mitgliedern des Gemeinderats die Donau hinunter bis zur Friedrichsau, einem großen, schön angelegten Freigelände.
