Description

Paul Gerhardt was born in 1607 in Gräfenhainichen, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. After studying theology in nearby Wittenberg, he became a tutor in Berlin for many years during the 30 Years War (1618 – 1648). From 1651 he held pastorates in Mittenwalde, Berlin and Lübben in the Spreewald. He died and was buried there in 1676.

He wrote 130 German poems for all festivities in the church year and many other occasions, most of which were also set to music and became the most popular songs in Protestant services.

In the current Protestant songbook there are 27 songs which, like “I sing to you with my heart and mouth…” have up to 18 strophes. I am not the only one who can sing many of the songs by heart. The lyrics are also suitable for recitation and meditation.

Intention

Paul Gerhardt’s songs are on the one hand wonderful, artistic poems – on the other hand full of trust in God and strength of faith. Even after personal strokes of fate, such as the death of his children, he gave expression to grief and trust in God. Especially through the settings by Johann Crüger and Johann Georg Ebeling, they have become known beyond Germany and have become favorite chorales.

Paul Gerhardt’s summer song ” Go out, my heart, and seek joy” has become a folk song with the melody by August Harder.

Bescheibung
