Egg dyeingÎNCONDEIEREA OUĂLOR

Text by Ana Olimpia Nicolescu / translated by Anca Tănase

Since ever, we Romanians
knew how to cherish love;
the sacred hope of our hands,
dyed with immortality.

From blob of tears – the sacred blood
Dripped down on Easter eggs…
When Jesus Himself, in His tomb,
Falls asleep only to rise again.

And an entire universe inside an egg,
A symbol of the life to come,
Reverberates in just an echo,
Light giving birth to light again.

Our life’s philosophy
Stands written on an egg’s shell;
Between majestic colors,
With poetry as a forever shield…

Women with whited skirts,
Dyed in onion leaves and clover
Are painting now the eggs,
With doina singing all over.

With poppy flowers and chamomile
On fields abundant with cornflowers,
Men also dye majestic sky
With gates facing towards all stars.

Our elders are gently smiling
When the semantron plays in the church
Having unshattered hope in Christ,
Eternally laughing in Săpânța graveyard…

Dyeing and traditions,
Forever told in tales
In all Romanian stories,
No other similar eggs!

Dintotdeauna, noi românii
am știut să prețuim iubirea;
speranța castă-n harul mâinii,
o-ncondeiem cu nemurirea.

Din bob de lacrimi – sânge sfânt
s-a scurs pe ouăle de Paște…
când Isus însuși , în mormânt,
adoarme spre a se renaște.

Și-un univers întreg din ou
simbolul vieții ce-o să vină,
reverberează în ecou,
lumina, generând lumină.

Filozofia vieții noastre
e scrisă-n coaja unui ou;
între culorile măiastre,
cu poezia în mantou…

Femei cu poalele albite ,
în coji de ceapă și trifoi
pictează ouă-mpodobite,
cu doinele ce cântă-n noi.

Cu flori de mac și romoniță
pe câmpul plin de albăstrele,
încondeiază și bădiță
un cer cu porți, deschise-s stele.

Iar cei bâtrâni, glumesc duios
când toaca bate-n turla veche
și cu nădejdea în Hristos ,
râd la Săpânța nepereche…

De-ncoindeiere și tradiții,
mereu legendele au spus
în româneștile ediții ,
că ouă , c-ale noastre nu-s !
